Students, teachers, staff, administrators and brothers gathered on June 29 at the high school covered court to celebrate in the Holy Eucharist the Solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul, apostles. At the same time, as the school year started, it prayed for the inspiration and gifts of the Holy Spirit for the school to pursue its mission of Christian education—for students, like Jesus Christ, may grow in wisdom and year, and in divine and human favor (Luke 2:52).
During the Celebration of the Light, students from different levels lighted seven candles to symbolize the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit (Isaiah 11:2-3): Wisdom, Understanding, Knowledge, Counsel, Fortitude, Piety, and Fear of the Lord. They lighted the candles from the Paschal Candle, which symbolized Christ, as the Light.
The Holy Mass was also offered in thanksgiving for the 70 years of Marist presence in the Philippines, specifically in Mindanao and Luzon (Marist School, of Marikina City, is the only Marist school of the Brothers in Luzon). The students and personnel listened to the video message of Bro Ernesto Sanchez, superior general of the Marist Brothers who greeted the Marist Brothers and Lay Marists in the Philippines and East Asia. In the video, he reminded all Marists of Champagnat of the challenges of the 22nd General Chapter – to be beacon of hope, face and hands of God’s tender mercy, bridge-builders and to journey with young people on the margins of life and respond boldly to emerging needs (http://lavalla200.champagnat.org/en/).
The Mass prayed for healing and peace and for victims of violence and injustices, especially the recent killings of Frs. Richmond Nilo, Marcelito Paez.
